How long do hemorrhoids last?

Hemorrhoids are caused by high blood pressure which can cause swelling of blood veins in the anus or the lower rectum region. This results to excessive pain in the affected region. The following factors have been linked to cause hemorrhoids: obesity, infection of the lower rectum, passing hard stool, constipation, sitting for longer periods, frequent diarrhea, and overuse of laxatives. A common question asked by people who suffer hemorrhoids is who long it lasts. It can be persistent in some people and to others, it can be short lasting. The duration varies with a variety of conditions such as the type of hemorrhoids.

There are two types of hemorrhoids with regards to their place of infection:

External hemorrhoids – this is the most painful and irritating type of hemorrhoid since it occurs just under the skin and around the lower rectum area/anus. They become uncomfortable because the overlying skin becomes irritated and might erode. The pain tends to be sever and irritating when the blood clot forms inside the external hemorrhoid. With this type of hemorrhoid, a lump might form around the anus area and it’s very painful. After the blood clot dissolve, a skin tag is left which may become itchy and irritated.

Internal hemorrhoids – this type of hemorrhoids occur at the beginning of the rectum and cannot be seen or felt. They are usually painless but cause some kind of bleeding. You might see blood on the toilet paper or in the toilet bowl. In some cases, it might extend and prolapse beyond the rectum which can worsen the condition. Frequent wiping of the infected area may worsen the whole condition.
Thrombosed hemorrhoid – this type of hemorrhoid occur when blood discharge from an internal hemorrhoid causes blood clot which may be painful, irritating and itching. It can also cause inflammation and swelling as well as causing the formation of lump around the lower rectum area.

There are several factors that influence the period of hemorrhoid healing

Cause – since hemorrhoid is caused by various factors, some may cause a condition that is long lasting or short lasting. Pregnancy has been linked to the development of hemorrhoid to expectant mothers. Expectant mothers have high blood pressure which causes swelling and inflammation of the anus veins and thus causing hemorrhoids. This type of condition usually lasts until the time of delivery. In the case of obese persons, it tends to last for a longer period since hemorrhoid in obese individual is caused by high blood pressure. Though there are some medical interventions that reduce this problem, it tends to come over and over again due to high blood pressure.
Type of hemorrhoid – small external and internal hemorrhoids may take up to two weeks to heal while thrombosed may take up to 1 month.

Severity – severe internal hemorrhoid which prolapse and extends infections to other parts of the body may take up to 3 months to heal due to the complications. Thrombosed hemorrhoid may take up to 3 months if it gets worse due to the formation of lumps. Poor cleaning of the anus makes the hemorrhoid worse and may increase the period of healing.

Frequency – for individuals who are experiencing this type of condition for the first time, healing becomes quickly. Individuals who have frequent hemorrhoid such as the obese, the healing duration tend to be longer.
